A Community of Who
I am Whovian1 and I am a Professor at a university writing a conference paper on fandom communities. Specifically I am looking at how we developed our communities and identities around a specific Doctor, and how/why that community remains when our Doctor "dies," for lack of a better word.
Doctor Who has not had a breakthrough in academic circles, which is a shame because it is a show rich in themes and possesses a very engaging community. Through the course of the next couple of months I ask that fellow Whovians respond to questions and research that I post, generating feedback on which Doctor became yours and what did you do, or will you do, when your Doctor regenerated. The goal at the end of this is that by the time the PCA (Pop Culture of America) conference rolls around in April of next year, I will have community generated feedback to discuss how people build communities and sustain them in the death of the central figure, all with an emphasis on Doctor Who.
I'd like to start with a simple question. Which Doctor made you fall in love with the show? I'm not asking which one you first came into contact with (I saw Nine, but didn't become a die hard until Ten, who made me delve into Who lore). So who made you love the show and what was it about that incarnation of the Doctor that made you scream out their catchphrase at every moment.
Let's get people outside the fandom recognize the greatness of Doctor Who and how much this show has to offer!
