I was discussing Doctor Who with my dad earlier today, telling him all about the 50th Anniversary. He used to watch it in the 60's, but he's barely watched any of it since then. He said he really liked it then, but what really sucked him in at that age was Captain Marvel comics. I told him, "Dad, that's entirely different." He replied, "Not entirely. They're both superheroes." My knee jerk response was, "The Doctor isn't a superhero! He's a Time Lord who stole a Tardis and ran away." However after saying that I started thinking. I've never thought of the Doctor as a superhero, and I tried to figure out why. He doesn't have superpowers like Superman, but neither do Batman or Ironman. He doesn't exactly have a secret identity, but he is very mysterious and no one knows his name. And again, Ironman (in the movie at least) announced who he was at a press conference, so a ssecret identity is not prerequisite. The Doctor has saved people and worlds - pretty heroic. Of course he's also destroyed people, but then again so have some heroes. So what do you guys think? I just can't picture the Doctor as a superhero no matter what parallels I can see, but maybe others can. Has anyone here ever thought of him as a superhero? Why or why not?
