My Reaction to "Turn Left"

Warning: I'm a Chinese Doctor Who fan and this reaction post contains bitchy comments on this episode's (possible) racial issues.

RTD really doesn't like China/Chinese/Oriental, right? Ever since in "Sound of Drums" he used an at-least-15-year-old news archive, intended to present the (better-developped) China today, with Chinese slogans which don't make sense, and a supposed Chinese News annoucer speaking God know what language which certainly isn't Mandarin, I pray to whatever God there is that RTD would never feel the need to mention China/Chinese in Whoniverse again. My prayer doesn't work, obviously. He simply wouldn't be happy if not all the usual stereotypes have been ticked from the list.

BTW, red hair and beetle(or is it meant to be a spider?) really don't mean anything malign in Chinese/East-Asian culture. They don't mean anything, actually. I don't think there're any myths or metaphors about them.

There's also the upside down Chinese character for "fortune" hung on the door head (which is shown towards the end just before Bad Wolf is everywhere). It should be a character for "happiness", not "fortune", and hung on the door itself, not on the door header. The character should be written in traditional Chinese, not in simplified Chinese as in the episode, since it's all about tradition and calligraphy (Chinese calligraphy can only be done in traditional Chinese). This tradition is a favourite one and still in practice today: I remember it from every Chinese New Year in my childhood. Also it isn't hung there for no matter what occasion as in the episode--only for celebrating New Year. However, this is only a personal offender. Of course they are not familiar with this kind of detail. (They only need to ask someone or google, though.)

All in all, the evil-oriental-native vs good-white-traveler thing leaves me with a nasty feeling. (Am I supposed to forgive all and cheer when he later bashes an AU!Nazi!Britain?) Also I don't think RTD's writing skills on big scale finals have improved at all, though "Midnight" had given me hope. The main theme seems to be "Without the companion, the Doctor is over; without the Doctor. the world is over".  Well...
